Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba, referred to as O'sensei, meaning 'Great Teacher'. Aikido techniques use joint locks, redirection and throwing techniques to neutralize an attack. Rather than counter force with force, the skilled practitioner of Aikido will unite with the attacker's force and redirect it in such a way as to minimize harm to all. In Aikido, size and strength provide no advantage and can even be a disadvantage. Smaller or slightly built people tend to develop the more subtle skills of Aikido sooner than larger or stronger people, who often have the habit of applying more strength when a technique isn't working for them.
